The United States Coast Guard launched a new heavy ice breaker for the Great Lakes on April 2, 2005. She was christened the USCGC Mackinaw after the original Great Lakes ice breaker that she will be replacing in October.

Album: Duluth Lighthouses
Duluth has several lighthouses in and around the harbor. Here are a sampling of photos I have taken of them over the years.

Album: Duluth Inner Range Lighthouse
The Duluth Inner Range Lighthouse was built on the South Pier of the harbor entrance, near the Aerial Lift Bridge. The purpose of the light was to provide a way for mariners to determine whether or not they were approaching the Duluth Harbor entrance straight on or not. If this light and the South Pier Light were lined up, then you knew you were not approaching at an angle.

Album: Two Harbors Light
The Two Harbors Lighthouse, located in Two Harbors, MN. The Two Harbors lighthouse was built in the late 1890s. The light is still maintained as an active aid to navigation, but the grounds are maintained by the Lake County Historical Society.

Album: Two Harbors Breakwater Light
This small lighthouse is located at the end of the breakwater for Burlington Bay in Two Harbors, MN. It has an almost identical twin on a similar breakwater in Grand Marais, MN.
